Excise duty on alcohol increases by 6% as of midnight
Sunday 16th March 2008 (and will rise 2% above the rate of inflation for the
next four years). This change will add 4 pence to a pint of beer, 3 pence to
a litre of cider, 14 pence to a bottle of wine and 55 pence to a bottle of
spirits. This is the first increase in duty on spirits since 1998. The
smallest brewers will continue to receive 50% duty relief from the Small
Brewers Relief Scheme.
Our view
It appears that the Chancellor has reacted strongly in light of recent
press coverage regarding excessive drinking. |
