Tobacco - excise duty

Excise duty rates on tobacco products are increased as of 6pm on 12th March 2008 in line with inflation. This is equivalent to 11 pence on a packet of 20 cigarettes and 4 pence on a pack of 5 cigars.

Our view
The Chancellor appears not to have been persuaded by the health lobby to apply higher than inflation duty increases this year.
